With Beijing increasingly critical with steel product mix and environment, China would need more DRI imports because scrap in China is not enough and qualified for short-process steelmaking technology, Mr. Tao Jiangshan, Deputy Secretary General of DRI Work Group of China Association of Metal Scrap Utilization said at DRI seminar held on June 16-19 in Shandong, China.
In 2012, the world produced 74 million tones of DRI, of which less than 0.6 million tones or 1% is produced in China; and 40% DRI produced in the largest EAF producer in the world, even if EAF output accounts for less than 10% steel production in the country, do not meet the mandatory state requirements.
Mr Tao estimates current Chinese demand for DRI at 15-20 million tones per annum.
